Evaluation of Two-Dimensional Phase Unwrapping Algorithms for Interfer- ometric Adaptive Optics Utilizing Liquid-Crystal Spatial Light Modulators

چکیده
A Twyman-Green interferometer is used to measure the phase induced by a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) via spatial-carrier phase measurement methods in order to characterize the phase response as a function of applied voltage. With the phase response characterized, the LC-SLM can be operated in a closed-loop adaptive optics system. Four separate phase unwrapping algorithms are evaluated for their ability to unwrap the resulting modulo 2 signal. The evaluation process consisted of measuring the response of the liquid-crystal spatial light modulator to applied voltages, creating a response matrix for the liquid-crystal spatial light modulator and then running the device in a closed-loop adaptive optics system using the response matrix. The results indicated that the two least-squares phase unwrapping algorithms, based on multigrid techniques and Fourier transform techniques, provided superior performance over a path following algorithm and a two-dimensional extension of Itoh’s method when using these algorithms in a closed-loop adap-

Submillisecond-response polymer network liquid crystal phase modulators at 1.06-lm wavelength
A fast-response and scattering-free polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) light modulator is demonstrated at k1⁄4 1.06 lm wavelength. A decay time of 117 ls for 2p phase modulation is obtained at 70 C, which is 650 faster than that of the host nematic LCs. The major tradeoff is the increased operating voltage. Potential applications include spatial light modulators and adaptive optics. VC 2011 ...

Recently we introduced the class of highly localized wavepackets (HLWs) as a generalization of optical Bessel-like needle beams. Here we report on the progress in this field. In contrast to pulsed Bessel beams and Airy beams, ultrashort-pulsed HLWs propagate with high stability in both spatial and temporal domain, are nearly paraxial (supercollimated), have fringe-less spatial profiles and thus...

متن کاملLow voltage blue phase liquid crystal for spatial light modulators.
We demonstrated a low-voltage polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) for phase-only modulation with a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS). A new device configuration was developed, which allows the incident laser beam to traverse the BPLC layer four times before exiting the LCoS. As a result, the 2π phase change voltage is reduced to below 24 V in the visible region. The response time...

New experimental results for scale-invariant implementations of the binary phase-only matched filter and the nonlinear joint transform correlator using ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulators are presented. We provide a comparative study of both architectures for real-time road-sign recognition. Signal-to-peak-noise ratios in excess of 5 dB over a scale range of 1.0 to 2.0 are ach...
